Healing begins for Murayo
Murayo Ali has just checked into the Mayo Clinic hospital for a complex operation that could change her life.
Murayo was left with severe injuries after being raped at age 7 in Mogadishu and cannot control her bodily functions. Infections are a constant risk. Children tease her about her diapers. She might have trouble getting pregnant.
On her way to the store, Murayo was dragged behind a bombed-out building and raped. The attack left her with massive tears in muscle and nerve tissue in the vaginal and rectal areas, so much so "the two openings became one," said pediatric surgeon Dr. Christopher Moir.
The Mayo Clinic accepted Murayo as one of their limited number of charity cases. The hospital selects the cases on the basis of significant need, where highly unusual medical expertise is necessary.
